How Tip Calculator works

A tip is a voluntary addition to a bill that acknowledges good service. The tip calculator determines the tip amount, the total and – if desired – how it is split among several people.

In percentage mode you specify a percentage of the bill. In round-up mode you instead name the target amount to round up to; from this the calculator determines the tip and the corresponding percentage.

The total is the bill + tip; divided by the number of people you get the amount per person.

Rounding up to a target amountTrinkgeld = Zielbetrag − Rechnung und Prozentsatz = Trinkgeld ÷ Rechnung × 100

The target amount must be at least as high as the bill.

The percentage always refers to the original bill. The total is the sum of the bill and the tip.

Percentage mode: tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100.
Round-up mode: tip = target amount − bill.
For a split bill, the total is distributed evenly among the people.

Common mistakes

Percentage of the total instead of the bill
The percentage is accidentally applied to an already increased amount, making the tip too high.
The tip percentage always refers to the original bill. The calculator automatically uses this as the basis.
Leaving awkward cent amounts
Pure percentage calculation often produces uneven amounts like €54.17, which are impractical in everyday life.
For an even final amount, use round-up mode and round directly to a target amount.
Only looking at the total for a split bill
Without the number of people it stays unclear how much each person has to pay including the tip.

Frequently asked questions

How much tip is customary?

In Germany, about 5 to 10% of the bill is customary in restaurants, and people often round up to an even amount. How much is appropriate depends on the occasion, service and region – the calculator works out the desired amount but gives no fixed recommendation.

How do I calculate the tip?

In percentage mode the tip is calculated as a percentage of the bill: tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100. When rounding up, you specify the target amount, and the tip is the difference between the target amount and the bill.

Should I round up or use a percentage?

Both are common. A fixed percentage makes the tip comparable, while rounding up to an even amount is more convenient in everyday life. When rounding up, the calculator additionally shows which percentage the rounded amount corresponds to.

How do I split the bill including the tip?

Specify the number of people, and the calculator splits the total evenly. It shows the amount per person and the tip share per person.

Is a tip tax-free?

Tips that guests pay to employees voluntarily on top of the bill are tax-free in Germany under Section 3 No. 51 EStG (German Income Tax Act). This is irrelevant to the calculation in the calculator – it only determines the amounts.
