Barbell Plate Loading Calculator Calculate symmetric barbell loading in kg or lb: plates per side, loaded weight, difference and total plate count.
Calculation note This calculation is for general orientation only. The result is based on your inputs and the stated assumptions, and may contain rounding.
Terms of use Explanation
How Barbell Plate Loading Calculator works The bar is subtracted from the target weight. Half of the rest is assembled per side from the available pairs of disks.
Symmetrical loading Total = bar + 2 × sum of disks per sideDuplicate values in the availability list represent additional pairs.
Practice
Practical examples For illustration only – your own calculation is what counts.
140 kg on Olympic bar A 20 kg bar should be loaded symmetrically to 140 kg using available kg disks.
Result: 25, 20 and 15 kg are loaded on each side; the goal is achieved exactly.
Target cannot be represented exactly The target lies between two loadings possible with the existing pairs.
Result: The calculator shows the closest symmetrical combination and the difference.
Count individual discs instead of pairs A single disc cannot be used symmetrically.
Enter only complete pairs; each pair appears once in the list.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions Why are plates calculated per side? A barbell must be loaded equally on both sides. Each list entry therefore represents an available disk pair.
How do I enter several identical pairs of disks? Repeat the value in the list, for example 20.20 for two 20kg pairs.
What happens without an exact combination? The calculator first minimizes the deviation and uses as few discs as possible if there is a tie.
Fasteners are only taken into account if their weight is included in the bar weight. Sources
