How Recipe Converter works

The recipe converter adjusts a recipe to a different amount by multiplying all ingredients by the same scaling factor. This preserves the ratios of the ingredients to one another, and the recipe works out even in a larger or smaller amount.

You determine the factor either from the ratio of target to original servings, or enter it directly. Units like grams, milliliters or pieces stay unchanged – only the number is converted.

Scale proportionally

Converting a recipe means multiplying all ingredients by the same factor.

Because all ingredients are multiplied by the same factor, their ratios are preserved – the recipe works out the same at any amount.

  • Factor > 1: recipe is enlarged (more servings).
  • Factor < 1: recipe is reduced (fewer servings).
  • Factor = 1: amounts stay unchanged.

From 4 to 6 servings

A recipe for 4 servings should make enough for 6 people. The factor is 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5, and all amounts are increased accordingly.

Result: Factor 1.5: 200 g of flour becomes 300 g, 2 eggs become 3.

Double a recipe with a factor

With a factor of 2, all ingredients are doubled directly – handy when no serving count is known.

Result: Factor 2: 100 g of sugar becomes 200 g.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Baking time scaled up too

    When doubling, the baking time is doubled too, even though it does not increase proportionally to the amount.

    Only scale the ingredient amounts. Adjust baking and cooking time separately based on pan and height and check for doneness.

  • Awkward piece counts kept

    A result like 1.5 eggs is taken literally instead of being sensibly rounded to whole pieces.

    Round piece-based ingredients like eggs to whole numbers and make up the remainder with liquid or flour.

  • Unit forgotten or confused

    Amounts are entered without a unit, so 200 g of flour and 200 ml of milk can no longer be told apart.

    Specify the unit for each ingredient. The calculator carries it unchanged into the result, but does not convert units into one another.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter servings or a factor?

Both lead to the same result. If you know the original and target servings, use servings mode – the calculator forms the factor as target servings ÷ original servings. If you want to double or halve directly, enter 2 or 0.5 in factor mode.

What do I do with awkward amounts like 1.5 eggs?

The calculator scales exactly and shows awkward values too. For piece-based ingredients like eggs, round sensibly to whole pieces and make up small deviations through the other ingredients.

Do spices and salt scale the same way?

Mathematically yes, but not always in terms of taste. When scaling up, spices, salt and leavening agents are often seasoned a bit more cautiously and tasted at the end, rather than scaled strictly linearly.

Does the baking time change with the amount?

No, not proportionally. The calculator only scales the ingredient amounts. Baking and cooking times depend on the pan, height and oven and must be adjusted separately.

Can I mix different units?

Yes. Each ingredient keeps its unit (g, ml, tbsp, piece …). The calculator only scales the number and does not convert units into one another – the unit converter is responsible for that.

Limitations

  • All ingredients are multiplied linearly by the same factor. The calculator does not model non-linear effects with spices, salt or leavening agents.
  • Piece-based ingredients (eggs, leaves, slices) mathematically produce awkward values and must be rounded sensibly by hand.
  • Baking, cooking and roasting times as well as pan and pot sizes are not converted – only the ingredient amounts.
  • Units are carried over unchanged. The calculator does not convert between g and kg or ml and l.
