How Hourly Wage Calculator works
The hourly wage calculator converts between hourly wage, monthly salary and annual salary. The basis is the agreed weekly working hours.
Compensation is predominantly agreed as a monthly or annual salary, while the hourly wage is directly stated primarily for mini-jobs, working students and collectively agreed positions. To objectively compare positions with different weekly working hours or different employment models (full-time, part-time, freelancer calculation), conversion to the hourly wage is essential. The statutory minimum wage is defined as a gross hourly wage — another reason to know your own hourly wage.
The central conversion factor is 4.333 (exactly: 52/12). Many employees incorrectly calculate with 4 weeks per month, which overestimates the hourly wage by about 8%. The factor 52/12 accounts for the fact that a calendar year has 52.143 weeks and distributes them evenly across 12 months. At 40 weekly hours this yields 173.33 monthly hours instead of just 160.
For a complete salary comparison, the pure hourly wage is often not sufficient. Bonus payments such as holiday pay (13th salary), vacation pay, premiums or employer pension contributions increase the effective hourly wage but are not visible in the monthly base compensation. Non-cash benefits (company car, transit pass, childcare subsidy) should also be considered.
Monthly hours = Weekly hours x 52 / 1252 calendar weeks are distributed evenly across 12 months. This yields the factor 4.333.
Hourly wage = Monthly salary / Monthly hoursThe hourly wage is the monthly salary divided by the average monthly hours.
The calculator performs a pure division. Taxes, social contributions, surcharges or collective agreement specifics are not considered.
