Explanation

How Working Days Calculator works

The calculator examines each calendar day. A day is a working day when its weekday is active and, with holiday checks enabled, it is not a statutory holiday.

Period and target date

Practice

Practical examples

Working week in May

Both boundary dates, Monday to Friday and Berlin holidays are considered from 4 to 8 May 2026.

Result: The period contains 5 calendar days and 5 working days.

Ten working days from Pentecost

Ten working days are added after Friday, 22 May 2026 in North Rhine-Westphalia; the start date is not counted.

Result: Whit Monday and Corpus Christi are skipped; the target date is 9 June 2026.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Monday to Friday

Part-time and weekend work may then be counted incorrectly.

    Select the weekdays actually worked.

  • Deducting every holiday twice

A holiday on an otherwise free weekday does not reduce the count again.

Use the overlap of selected weekdays and holidays.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are the start and end dates counted?

Both boundaries can be selected separately in period mode. In target mode the start date is the baseline and is not the first added working day.

What is an individual working week?

You select each weekday on which work normally takes place, so part-time, shift and weekend schedules can be represented.

Which holidays are included?

The model includes nationwide and state-wide statutory holidays for the selected German state, including movable holidays.

Are municipal holidays included?

No. The Augsburg Peace Festival and regionally limited rules for Assumption Day and Corpus Christi are not applied to an entire state.

How is a holiday on a weekend counted?

It is listed as a holiday in the period but only reduces working days if that weekday is active in the selected week.

What happens with zero working days?

The target remains the start date. A period can also contain zero considered calendar days depending on boundary selection.

Does the calculator work for past and future years?

Holidays are calculated from calendar rules and known time-dependent state rules. One-off or future legal changes require an editorial update.

Are leave and illness included?

No. Only the selected working week and statutory holidays are known; personal absences are not deducted.

How do working days differ from legal weekdays?

Working days follow your selection. Depending on the rule, the legal concept of a weekday may include Saturdays.

Limits

Limitations

  • Municipal and non-state-wide holidays are excluded.
  • Collective, company, shift and absence rules are not checked.
