How Gas cost calculator works

The gas cost calculator determines the gas costs per month and year. You either enter the consumption in kilowatt hours directly or calculate it visibly from the volume in cubic metres using the calorific value and state number.

Result: Energy costs of €2,160 plus €120 base price give €2,280 per year, around €190.00 per month.

Gas costs from the meter reading in m³

1,800 m³ gas volume, calorific value 10 kWh/m³, state number 0.95, €0.12/kWh unit price, €120 base price, 12 months.

Result: 17,100 kWh from 1,800 m³ × 10 × 0.95; energy costs of €2,052 plus €120 give €2,172 per year, around €181.00 per month.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Cubic metres entered as kilowatt hours

    The volume in m³ is used directly as the kWh consumption.

    Convert cubic metres to kWh first using the calorific value and state number, or use the "From m³" mode.

  • Base price forgotten

    Only the energy costs are calculated.

    Add the consumption-independent base price per period.

  • Calorific value roughly estimated

    A default value is used instead of the value from the bill.

    Take the calorific value and state number from your own gas bill.

Frequently asked questions

Which input paths does the gas cost calculator offer?

You either enter the gas consumption directly in kilowatt hours, as it usually appears on the annual statement, or you calculate it from the volume in cubic metres using the calorific value and state number.

How are cubic metres converted into kilowatt hours?

The consumption in kWh results from the volume in m³ times the calorific value in kWh/m³ times the state number. Both factors are shown on your gas bill; the calculator does not apply any silent default values.

What is the calorific value?

The calorific value indicates how much energy is contained in one cubic metre of gas. It depends on the gas quality and is usually around 8 to 12 kWh per m³.

What is the state number?

The state number corrects the volume measured at the meter to standard conditions and accounts for altitude and operating pressure. It is usually around 0.9 to 1.0.

Are current gas prices stored?

No. No up-to-date gas prices are assumed. The unit price and base price are user inputs from your contract.

What does the base price stand for?

The base price is the consumption-independent part, for example for meter rental or provision. It is added to the energy costs per billing period.

Why is the billing period important?

It determines the length to which consumption and base price refer. The calculator then normalises the total costs to a month and a year.

What is the difference from the heating cost calculator?

The gas cost calculator specialises in natural gas with the m³-to-kWh conversion. The heating cost calculator additionally covers further energy sources, a living-area estimate and a scenario comparison.

Are the results binding?

No. They are orientation based on your entries; your gas supplier's statement is decisive.
