Team Generator

Distribute a list of names randomly and evenly across teams or groups of a chosen size – locally in your browser.

Generators

Enter names to split them into teams.

Explanation

How Team Generator works

The team generator distributes a list of names randomly and evenly across teams. You choose whether to set a fixed number of teams or a fixed team size. The names are shuffled with the Fisher-Yates method and then dealt out in turn so the teams are as equal in size as possible.

Processing happens locally in the browser using Math.random. The list of names is neither stored nor transmitted; a shared link contains only the settings.

Limits of this tool

  • Math.random — not intended for legally binding draws.
  • No reproducible assignment (no seed).
  • No consideration of strength, roles or per-person constraints.

Practice

Practical examples

Sports teams

Randomly split a list of players into two equally sized teams.

Group work

Divide participants into groups of four each.

Draw

Reshuffle for a fair, random assignment without any order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How are the teams formed?

The names are first shuffled randomly (Fisher-Yates) and then dealt out to the teams in turn. This produces teams that are as equal in size as possible.

Are the teams always the same size?

As equal as possible. If the count does not divide evenly, some teams get one more person.

Are the names transmitted?

No. The list of names stays in the browser and is neither stored nor sent. The shared link, too, contains only the settings, not the names.

Can I reproduce the same assignment?

No. Every distribution is drawn randomly. Clicking “Reshuffle” creates a new assignment.

Tips

Good to know

  • Enter one name per line in the field.
  • “Reshuffle” creates a fresh, fair assignment.
  • The shared link contains only the settings, not the names.
