How PV self-consumption calculator works

The PV self-consumption calculator splits the annual generation of your PV system into self-consumption, feed-in and grid draw, and determines the self-consumption rate and self-sufficiency. Monetary values only appear if you enter the electricity price and feed-in tariff.

Self-consumption rate and self-sufficiency without monetary values

5,000 kWh annual generation, 4,000 kWh annual consumption, 1,500 kWh used directly, no prices entered.

Result: 3,500 kWh feed-in, 2,500 kWh grid draw, self-consumption rate 30%, self-sufficiency 37.5%.

Economic benefit with electricity price and feed-in tariff

6,000 kWh generation, 4,500 kWh consumption, 2,000 kWh self-consumption, €0.35/kWh electricity price, €0.08/kWh feed-in tariff.

Result: €700 in saved electricity costs plus €320 in feed-in revenue from 4,000 kWh give a €1,020 benefit per year; self-consumption rate 33.3%, self-sufficiency 44.4%.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Self-consumption larger than generation

    Self-consumption is set higher than generation or consumption.

    Self-consumption can at most be as large as the smaller of the two amounts of generation and consumption.

  • Self-consumption rate and self-sufficiency confused

    Both key figures are treated as equal.

    The rate refers to the generation, self-sufficiency to the consumption - these are different reference values.

  • Tariff estimated instead of entered

    A flat-rate feed-in tariff is assumed.

    Take the actual electricity price and the feed-in tariff from your contract and feed-in notice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the self-consumption rate?

The self-consumption rate indicates what share of the generated solar power is used directly yourself. It results from self-consumption divided by generation.

What does self-sufficiency mean?

Self-sufficiency shows what share of the household consumption is covered by your own PV system. It results from self-consumption divided by total consumption.

How is the feed-in calculated?

Feed-in is the part of the generation that is not used yourself: generation minus self-consumption. It cannot become negative.

What is the grid draw?

Grid draw is the electricity you additionally draw from the grid: consumption minus self-consumption. It cannot become negative either.

Do I have to enter prices?

No. Without prices the calculator only computes energy amounts and rates. Savings and feed-in revenue are added only once you enter the electricity price and feed-in tariff.

Are feed-in rates stored?

No. No EEG feed-in rates are built in. You enter the electricity price and feed-in tariff yourself from your contract or your feed-in notice.

Does the calculator account for weather or system size?

No. It does not simulate any yield. Generation, consumption and self-consumption are your measured values or estimates.

Where do I get the values?

Generation comes from the inverter or meter, consumption from the electricity bill, and self-consumption from a bidirectional meter or the system monitoring.
