Explanation
How Fuel Cost Calculator works
The fuel cost calculator computes trip costs based on distance, consumption and fuel price. In consumption mode, it determines actual consumption from driven kilometers and refueled liters.
The distance is converted to hundred-kilometer units, multiplied by consumption, yielding the liters needed.
Determine consumptionConsumption (l/100 km) = (refueled liters / driven km) * 100
The refueled liters are normalized to 100 km.
Knowledge
Understanding Fuel Costs and Consumption
Fundamentals for calculating fuel costs and consumption values.
Fuel costs depend on three factors: distance, vehicle consumption and fuel price. Consumption is typically stated in liters per 100 kilometers.
Distance is the full entered route; there is no separate return switch.
Consumption is treated as constant over the full route.
The price per liter comes only from the input.
Per-person costs appear only for more than one person.
Practice
Practical examples
For illustration only – your own calculation is what counts.
Commuter Route
Calculate the trip costs for a 50 km distance at 7 l/100 km and 1.75 euros per liter.
Result: For 50 km, 3.5 liters are needed. The trip costs are 6.13 euros.
Road Trip with Three
Calculate the trip costs for 600 km at 8 l/100 km, 1.80 EUR/liter and 3 persons.
Result: Total costs are 86.40 euros. Per person that is 28.80 euros.
Determine Consumption
Determine the consumption after 450 km driven and 38 liters refueled.
Result: Consumption is 8.44 l/100 km. Costs were 14.78 euros per 100 km.
City Driving
Calculate trip costs for 15 km city driving at 9 l/100 km and 1.85 EUR/liter.
Result: For 15 km in city traffic, fuel costs amount to 2.50 euros.
Notes
Common mistakes
Using manufacturer specification as actual consumption
A WLTP test value from the brochure or data sheet is used unchecked as consumption for the specific trip.
Determine your own consumption with the consumption mode: driven kilometers and refueled liters using the full-tank method. Alternatively use the on-board computer value.
Only the outbound trip calculated
For commuter routes, only the one-way distance is entered. The daily fuel costs are then twice as high as calculated.
For commuter costs, enter the daily total distance (round trip) or double the result.
City and highway consumption equated
The same consumption is used for different routes although profile, speed and traffic can change it.
Use suitable measured values or calculate route sections separately and add the costs.
Driver forgotten in cost splitting
Fuel costs are only divided by the passengers, the driver is not counted. With 3 passengers, costs are divided by 3 instead of 4.
The driver counts as a person. With 1 driver and 2 passengers, costs are divided by 3.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate fuel costs for a trip?
Distance divided by 100, multiplied by consumption in l/100 km yields the liters needed. Multiplied by the price per liter gives the costs.
How do you calculate consumption in l/100 km?
Liters refueled divided by kilometers driven, multiplied by 100. Example: 40 liters over 500 km yields 8 l/100 km.
How do you split fuel costs fairly?
The total costs are divided by the number of passengers. The driver counts as a person.
Which consumption value should I use?
Use a suitable measured or trip-computer value where possible. A test value may differ because of route, driving, load and weather.
Are the calculated costs exact?
The calculation is a reference value. Actual consumption depends on driving style, traffic, load, tire pressure and weather.
Does the calculator also work for diesel?
Yes. The calculator works with any fuel type. Simply enter the corresponding consumption and price per liter.
How do I calculate monthly fuel costs for commuters?
There is no commuter or return-trip mode. Add the journeys actually planned; for equal outbound and return legs, total distance is twice the one-way distance.
Can I use the calculator for electric cars?
No. This calculator expects liters per 100 km and a price per liter; EV energy use, charging losses and charging prices are not modeled correctly.
Limits
Limitations
The calculator works with a fixed average consumption. Actual consumption varies with driving style, traffic, gradient, load and weather.
Wear costs (tires, brakes, oil), insurance, tax and depreciation are not included. For full kilometer costs, these must be added.
The fuel price is entered as a fixed value. Day-to-day price fluctuations between gas stations and times of day are not represented.
Electric and hybrid vehicles are not directly supported. For electricity costs, use the electricity cost calculator.
