How Public Holidays Calculator works

The public holidays calculator lists the statutory public holidays of a year in Germany for the selected federal state. It adds the state-wide holidays of that state to the nine nationwide holidays and derives the movable holidays from the date of Easter.

Public holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia

The statutory public holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia are listed for the year 2026.

Result: North Rhine-Westphalia has eleven statutory public holidays in 2026, two of them additional state-wide ones (Corpus Christi, All Saints' Day); three fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

Public holidays in Bavaria

The statutory public holidays in Bavaria are listed for the year 2026.

Result: Bavaria has twelve statutory public holidays in 2026, three of them additional state-wide ones; the Augsburg Peace Festival, which applies only locally, is not included.

Common mistakes

  1. Assuming all holidays apply nationwide

    Corpus Christi, All Saints' Day or Reformation Day apply only in certain federal states.

    Select the federal state in which the holiday should apply.

  2. Shifting weekend holidays

    In Germany, statutory public holidays are not made up on a working day.

    Keep in mind that a holiday on a weekend does not create an extra day off.

Frequently asked questions

How many statutory public holidays are there?

Nine statutory public holidays apply nationwide. Each federal state can set further state-wide holidays, so the total differs from state to state.

What are movable holidays?

Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday and Corpus Christi depend on the date of Easter. The calculator derives them from Easter Sunday of the chosen year.

Why does the federal state matter?

In Germany, public holidays are a matter for the states. Corpus Christi, All Saints' Day, Reformation Day or the Day of Repentance and Prayer apply only in certain federal states.

Are municipal holidays included?

No. The Augsburg Peace Festival applies only in the city of Augsburg, and in some states Assumption Day and Corpus Christi apply only in parts of the state. The calculator does not model such municipal special cases.

What happens to holidays on a weekend?

A statutory holiday on a Saturday or Sunday remains a holiday but, in Germany, is not moved to another day. The calculator reports this number separately.

Which years does the calculator cover?

The calculator computes holidays for years from 1970 to 2200 from calendar rules and known state regulations. One-off or future rule changes must be updated editorially.

Does the calculator also show school holidays?

No. School holidays and bridge days are not statutory public holidays and are not part of this calculator.

Why does Reformation Day appear only in some states?

Reformation Day is a statutory holiday in several eastern and northern German states. In 2017 it applied nationwide on a one-off basis; the calculator takes that into account.
