Calculate pacePace and km/h from distance and time
Distance
Distance preset or custom distance.
km
Distance in kilometres (for custom distance).
Time
Total time in hours, minutes and seconds.
h
Whole hours of time.
min
Minute component of time.
s
Second component of time from 0 to 59.

Explanation
How Pace Calculator works
The pace calculator links the four quantities distance, time, pace and speed. If two of them are known, the others can be calculated. Pace describes the tempo as minutes per kilometre, speed as kilometres per hour.
Pace, time and distance
Pacepace = time ÷ distance
The total time is divided by the route length and gives the time per kilometre.
Speedspeed (km/h) = 3600 ÷ pace (s/km)
Pace and speed are reciprocals of each other, converted via the seconds in an hour.
Practice
Practical examples
For illustration only – your own calculation is what counts.
Pace for 10 km
A 10 km run is completed in 50 minutes; the pace and speed are sought.
Result: 10 km in 50:00 gives a pace of 5:00 min/km and a speed of 12 km/h.
Finish time for the half marathon
At a pace of 5:00 min/km the finish time for the half marathon distance of 21.0975 km is sought.
Result: At 5:00 min/km the half marathon gives a finish time of about 1:45:29.
Distance from time and pace
In 50 minutes at a pace of 5:00 min/km the distance covered is calculated.
Result: 50:00 at 5:00 min/km corresponds to 10 km.
Convert pace to km/h
A pace of 5:00 min/km is converted into a speed in km/h.
Result: 5:00 min/km corresponds to 12 km/h.
Notes
Common mistakes
Confusing pace and speed
A smaller pace is faster, a larger km/h number is faster – the direction is opposite.
Make sure whether you are comparing min/km or km/h.
Entering seconds as decimal minutes
5.5 minutes is not 5:50 but 5:30.
Enter the seconds component in the seconds field from 0 to 59.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is pace?
Pace indicates how many minutes and seconds you run per kilometre, expressed as min/km. A lower pace means a faster tempo.
How are pace and km/h related?
Pace and speed are two views of the same tempo. The rule is: speed in km/h = 3600 divided by the pace in seconds per kilometre.
Which standard distances are there?
The calculator knows 5 km, 10 km, the half marathon at 21.0975 km and the marathon at 42.195 km. For other routes you enter your own distance.
What can the calculator compute?
From any two known quantities it calculates the third: pace from distance and time, the finish time from distance and pace, the distance from time and pace, and the conversion between pace and km/h.
How do I enter seconds?
Time and pace can be entered with a seconds component. The seconds value is between 0 and 59 in each case; whole minutes and hours are captured separately.
Does the pace calculator use a constant tempo?
Yes. The calculator assumes a constant pace over the entire route. Real runs vary due to incline, wind, surface and fatigue.
How is rounding handled?
Pace and time are displayed rounded to whole seconds, speed to two decimal places. Internally the calculation uses full precision.
Does the calculator replace a training plan?
No. It only converts tempo, time and distance. Training control, heart rate and load are not part of the calculator.
Limits
Limitations
The calculator assumes a constant pace and does not model changes of tempo.
Incline, wind, surface, altitude and daily form are not taken into account.
