Explanation

How Cash and Coin Counter works

The cash and coin counter sums up your euro cash: for each denomination you enter the count, the calculator multiplies it by the face value and adds notes and coins up separately. This is handy for cashing up, emptying the piggy bank or preparing change.

The total is the sum of all partial amounts. Cent amounts are calculated exactly, so that no rounding errors creep in when adding up many small coins.

Each denomination yields count × face value; all partial amounts are added up to the total.

Euro notes and coins

The euro has seven banknotes and eight coins.

Banknotes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros. Coins come in 1 and 2 euros as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents.

  • Notes: €5 to €500 (seven denominations).
  • Coins: 1 cent to €2 (eight denominations).
  • The €500 note has no longer been issued since 2019, but remains valid.

Cashing up

Result: €110.00 in notes + €3.05 in coins = €113.05 across 11 pieces.

Emptying the piggy bank

The piggy bank holds 2 × €50 note and 3 × €2 coin – how much has been collected?

Result: €100.00 in notes + €6.00 in coins = €106.00 across 5 pieces.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Count confused with monetary value

    Instead of the number of notes, the monetary amount is entered (e.g. „100“ in the €50 note field).

    Each field is for the count, i.e. the number of notes or coins of that denomination – not the amount.

  • Cent and euro coins confused

    20-cent coins are accidentally counted as a €20 value or vice versa.

    Watch the labels: cent coins (1 to 50 cents) and euro coins (1 and 2 euros) are separate fields.

  • Assuming coin rolls have a fixed target quantity

    It is assumed that the calculator checks whether the count is enough for a complete coin roll.

    The calculator only sums up the value. Target quantities and rolling rules are set by your bank.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count my cash with the calculator?

For each denomination – from the €500 note to the 1-cent coin – enter the number of notes and coins. The calculator multiplies each count by its face value and adds everything up to the total.

How do I count coins as quickly as possible?

First sort the coins by denomination into separate stacks and then count the number per stack. That way you only have to enter one number per denomination, instead of adding up each coin individually.

Does the bank accept my small change?

Banks accept euro coins, but often require pre-sorted or rolled coins and sometimes a fee. Ask about your bank's terms in advance. The calculator tells you beforehand what amount adds up.

Does the calculator help with rolling coins?

The calculator determines the count and total value per denomination. It does not account for the exact target quantities for coin rolls (e.g. 50 pieces for 1- and 2-cent coins) – your bank's specifications are decisive for that.

Which euro notes and coins are there?

There are seven banknotes (5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros) and eight coins (1 and 2 euros as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents). The €500 note has no longer been issued since 2019, but remains legal tender.

  • No authenticity check takes place. The calculator assumes that all counted notes and coins are valid.
