Explanation

How EV charging cost calculator works

The EV charging cost calculator determines the cost of charging - either for a single charge or for a whole year with an optional charging mix of several charging types.

Energy and loss

Battery energyKapazität × (Zielladestand − Startladestand)

The energy actually charged into the battery.

Grid energyBatterieenergie / (1 − Ladeverlust)

The energy drawn from the grid and billed.

Charging mix

Blended costsSumme je Anteil (Jahresenergie × Anteil / (1 − Verlust) × Preis)

Each share has its own price and loss.

Practice

Practical examples

Single charge from 20 to 80 percent

Battery 60 kWh, start 20 %, target 80 %, 10 % charging loss, EUR 0.35/kWh, consumption 18 kWh/100 km.

Result: 36 kWh into the battery, around 40 kWh drawn from the grid, about EUR 14.00 per charge and roughly 200 km of range.

Annual costs with a charging mix

12,000 km/year, 18 kWh/100 km, 70 % at home at EUR 0.32/kWh (8 % loss) and 30 % public at EUR 0.55/kWh (12 % loss).

Result: Around 2,160 kWh of battery energy per year, blended costs of about EUR 931 per year and around EUR 78 per month.

Notes

Common mistakes

  • Charging loss ignored

Only the battery energy is assumed to be paid for.

Enter the charging loss; the higher grid energy is what is billed.

  • Shares do not add up to 100 percent

The charging mix is incomplete or overstated.

Choose shares so that together they add up to 100 percent.

  • Range read too optimistically

The estimated range is understood as guaranteed.

Temperature, speed and driving style reduce the real range.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which modes does the charging cost calculator offer?

A mode for the cost of a single charge or trip, and a mode for the monthly and annual charging costs derived from mileage.

How much energy does a charge require?

The battery energy is the capacity times the difference between the target and starting charge level. The charging loss increases the energy actually drawn from the grid.

Why is there a charging loss?

Charging incurs losses in the charger, cable and battery. The calculator scales up the grid energy using the entered loss, because that is what is billed.

How is the range estimated?

From the charged battery energy and the consumption per 100 km. Real range depends on temperature, speed and driving style.

What is the benefit of the charging mix?

It splits the annual energy into shares such as home, public and fast charging, each with its own price and loss, giving a realistic blended price.

Do the shares have to add up to 100 percent?

Yes, for a meaningful result the shares should together add up to 100 percent. The calculator flags implausible totals.

Are tariffs stored?

No. All prices per kWh are user inputs. No external or current tariffs are assumed.

How is the cost per km calculated?

The annual costs are divided by the annual mileage. In addition, the cost per 100 km is shown.

Why is public charging more expensive?

Public and fast-charging points usually have higher prices per kWh and sometimes higher losses. The charging mix makes this effect visible.

Are the results binding?

No. They are orientation based on your inputs; real costs depend on the tariff, charging behaviour and conditions.

Limits

Limitations

  • All prices per kWh are user inputs; no tariffs are stored.
  • The range estimate is idealised and does not account for real environmental conditions.
  • Not a binding cost commitment; real charging costs depend on the tariff and behaviour.
